Where to stay in Tallinn?

Tallinn's hospitality industry is relatively new. As part of the USSR years ago, tourism to the area was not in full swing because of the difficulties associated with travelling behind the Iron Curtain. After Estonia won its independence, new hotels sprang up or old ones were renovated. Prices remained reasonable compared with other tourist centers because salaries in the area are not very high, and taxes in general are not that high in Estonia. As a result, tourists came to find that they got more bang for their buck when they spent their vacations in the historic city of Tallinn.

The city offers numerous options for accommodations and covers not only a wide range of budgets but also a range of preferences for style and proximity to nightlife. Here, you can find 5-star hotels, boutique hotels, apartments, and spa hotels. There aren't too many bed and breakfast hotels, but guests can definitely find some cheap options or hostels.

16EUR Hostels

If you're on a budget, the 16EUR Hostels offers cheap accommodations that meet all basic needs. With rooms spread across three hostels, guests can choose a double room for 32 euros, a single room for 16 euros, or a dorm room for 11 euros. Prices may vary according to the season or day of the week.

16EUR Hostels has been in business for six years, providing decent housing for affordable rates to lone travellers and families alike. Among the amenities on offer are free WiFi services; a 24-hour reception desk; a sauna; a private toilet and shower; a TV; and a scooter, bike, or car on rent. There is also a public kitchen, where hostel residents can cook their own meals, or they can opt for a buffet breakfast. Two of the hostels are equipped with saunas and pools. Between 8 am and 11 am, guests enjoy free access to the mini spas. A couple of the hostels have TVs in the lobby or common rooms.

One of the hostels, Munkenhof, is located within Old Town, the medieval center of the city of Tallinn. Fat Margaret's, another hostel, can be found at the gates of Old Town, within walking distance of the city's port.

The Pirita Klooster Guesthouse

Another cheap hotel is the Pirita Klooster Guesthouse. Run by the Bridgettine sisters, the Pirita convent has a guesthouse that can accommodate up to 41 people in 20 single, double, and triple rooms. Prices start at 34 euros for a single room and run up to 80 euros for four people. Payments are only accepted in cash, and the cost of the room includes breakfast and private parking. Lunch and dinner can also be provided, upon request.

Each room has a separate shower room, phone, and Internet access. There is also a library with books in many languages, as well as computer facilities, a conference room, and a TV room. Although the convent is run by Catholic nuns, people of all faiths and creeds are welcomed.

The guesthouse's proximity to the ruins of a medieval convent make it a great place to stay the night after a day exploring the historic site. It is also only 7 km away from Tallinn's Old Town, where even more entertainment options are available. Guests who wish to participate in Mass can attend services in the chapel. Money earned from the guesthouse is spent on social projects organized by the convent.

The Kalev Spa Hotel

The perfect spot for a family holiday

Also among the cheap options for hotels in Tallinn is the Kalev Spa Hotel. Each room comes with different facilities, where some offer excellent views of the city and others offer access to the waterpark. The waterpark and fitness center are the hotel's main attractions, especially among the locals.

Water aerobics is an extremely popular class offered at the fitness center using the ground floor's exercise pool. While underwater exercise devices are being used, Estonia's top instructors guide the workout, which is approximately an hour long.

The VIP saunas on the hotel's first floor include a large lobby for parties or gatherings, complete with leather couches, low tables, and a wall-mounted TV. A special menu is designed for this area and covers snacks and beverages that are provided by Restaurant Linda.

At the waterpark, several pools are available, including a 50-metre pool with 8 lanes, a smaller pool, a kids' pool, and a paddling pool for toddlers. The larger pools are usually booked in advance. The waterpark also has themed baths such as a pearl bath and a flower bath, as well as a hot tub large enough for a medium-sized group. Kids and adults will enjoy using the three water slides, while those looking for a chance to detox can spend time in the Finnish or steam saunas.
